Boxing News: Amir Khan Out-Foxes, Dominates Devon Alexander

(LAS VEGAS) -- Popular welterweight Amir Khan was looking to dominate former world champion Devon Alexander in the main event on Showtime Championship Boxing. Khan did exactly that inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena, but if he was expecting to build some sort of fervor toward a showdown with Floyd Mayweather, his performance left a lot to be desired.

Granted, “King” Khan thoroughly out-classed Alexander for the allotted 12 rounds. However, in doing so, the action was virtually non-existent throughout much of the encounter, leaving the 7,768 in attendance restless and irritable. Khan’s safety-first approach prevented his American counterpart from ever getting into a rhythm, but even though Alexander landed several clean shots during the battle, his attacks were few and far between.

The Englishman was very relaxed inside the ring as he picked apart his foe with a pesky right jab and slick counter left hooks. Amir never hurt the St. Louis native at any point in the tussle but he didn’t need to; he was racking up points round after round. Alexander tried to get his offense going, but Khan’s constant movement and angles perplexed him routinely.

By the time the final round approached, Alexander fought without enough determination and urgency to allow the Brit to coast to a unanimous decision. Khan won the verdict unanimously by the margins of 119-109, 118-110 and 120-108. Sherdog.com also saw it 118-110 for Khan, who improved to 30-3 with 19 KOs.

“He was fast but I felt my speed was better,” Khan said afterward. “I felt real good out there. My jab was working really well. I feel that I have the best jab in the (division).”

Alexander, who fell to 26-3 with 14 KOs, made no excuses after the fight, saying that Khan’s style gave him trouble and that he couldn’t figure his opponent out. Khan certainly was elusive in the ring and he was brimming with confidence afterward.

“I just fought a three-time world champion,” Khan stated. “I proved that I’m a force at 147 pounds … I didn’t call out Floyd Mayweather with much confidence last time but after tonight I think I proved to everyone I’m getting better and better and [I’m] ready for him. I am just starting to hit my peak.”

Khan is a wildly popular fighter in the UK and there have been rumors for two years about a possible matchup between he and Mayweather. If the Manny Pacquiao fight somehow falls through for the umpteenth time, Khan might get his wish in May.
