Ben Rothwell Broke Arm Blocking Kick Before Stopping Overeem at UFC Fight Night

Ben Rothwell will remember UFC Fight Night “Jacare vs. Mousasi 2” for a plethora of reasons.

His first-round knockout of Alistair Overeem will undoubtedly be the strongest recollection, but his evening will also be memorable because of the broken arm he sustained blocking one of the former Strikeforce champion’s infamous kicks.

“I ate a kick, didn’t block it properly and he broke it,” Rothwell revealed to Fox Sports. “I knew I did not want to block a kick wrong again. I had a feeling that something could have been wrong. That’s the good thing about a fight, the adrenaline’s going.”

If Rothwell hadn’t revealed the injury following the fight, it would have been hard to guess.

The Wisconsin native was full of confidence, wisdom and inspiration during his post-fight Octagon interview.

“I’m feeling like you just witnessed what happens when you just believe in yourself,” Rothwell said. “And now I’m ready to make my way to the title. This just proves it, right here.”

While Rothwell isn’t necessarily next in line for Cain Velasquez’s belt, a win over a name like Overeem helps to boost his stock, especially following what amounts to more than a year layoff.

Rothwell hadn’t competed since serving a suspension for failing a post-fight drug test after beating Brandon Vera at UFC 164.
