Former M-1 Global lightweight champion Daniel Weichel has signed to compete in Bellator’s next featherweight tournament.

Bellator officials announced the news Wednesday. Weichel is expected to debut in 2014 as a quarterfinalist in the Season 10 featherweight bracket.

“It´s like a dream come true fighting for Bellator MMA,” Weichel said in the official release. “I can’t wait to enter the cage and begin the toughest tournament out there. Fighting in the U.S. and live on Spike TV is a thrill, so I will go out there to make my team at MMA Spirit and the greatest fans in the world proud. I always wanted to compete with the best fighters, and I can do just that at Bellator. My hard work has paid off, and you will get to see another beast at featherweight, I can promise that.”

Weichel, 28, has won eight of his last nine fights. The German captured the M-1 Global lightweight crown in November 2011 but relinquished the belt in his first defense, submitting to a Musa Khamanaev heel hook last summer. “The Weasel” responded to the defeat by posting three straight victories, however, closing out 2012 with wins over Semen Tyrlya and Georgi Stoyanov before besting Artiom Damkovsky this past February at M-1 Challenge 37.
