E.J. Brooks def. Kalvin Hackney via unanimous decision

Richard Hale vs. Josh Burns

Keith Mills

Hale stormed Burns.
Round 1
Hale feints a front kick and Burns swings punches over the top. The taller Hale catches Burns with a jab and Burns is clearly dazed, on rubbery legs. More left hands come from Hale and Burns goes down. Big right hands now as Hale looks to finish, but Burns turtles up to stay in the fight, if barely. Ref Myron Gaudet is watching closely as Hale mounts Burns’ back and unloads with more unanswered shots. Burns is out of this and the ref calls it off at the 38-second mark, a speedy TKO win for Rich Hale.

Andrey Koreshkov vs. Derrick Krantz

Round 1
Krantz comes forward, moving Koreshkov backward toward the cage, but the Russian backs him off with a flurry of hooks. Koreshkov charges with a lunging knee, holds a long stance to keep Krantz at range and then pushes him even further off with a spinning back-kick. Krantz tries to get inside to tie up, can’t get it on the first try but grabs his man on the second attempt. Krantz lands a few knees to the body before being reversed. He quickly turns Koreshkov back around and they trade knees inside as they pummel for position. Krantz has Koreshkov’s right leg in the air on a single-leg try but Koreshkov has underhooks and he defends the takedown. Good knee up the middle from Kratz but Koreshkov doesn’t like it and punishes him with a hard, short elbow inside. Koreshkov denies another single-leg try and they move along the fence. He explodes with a series of knees and slips, pulling Krantz into his guard as he falls. Krantz scrambles and tries to take Koreshkov’s back as the Russian works to back up. Krantz secures the back with one minute left in the round and sinks in his hooks, then begins hunting for the rear-naked choke. Koreshkov twists around and Krantz tries an armbar, but Koreshkov is loose. Knees and a hard body kick go for Koreshkov but he gets tied up on a throw in the closing seconds and absorbs some ground-and-pound punches from Krantz.

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Koreshkov
Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Koreshkov
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Koreshkov

Round 2
K. Mills

Koreshkov went into Tekken
mode on Krantz.
Krantz wants to clinch up again early in the second but Koreshkov turns him away and punishes with a hard uppercut and hooks. Krantz dives at a single-leg 20 seconds later and has that stuffed as well. He holds a waistlock and Koreshkov walks him toward the cage, kneeing along the way. Koreshkov is twice warned by ref Myron Gaudet not to hold Krantz’ shorts as they walk along, trading knees. Krantz gets on the outside and throws knees to Koreshkov’s legs. Koreshkov breaks off with a hard right hand, comes forward with an uppercut-hook combo. A jumping knee scores for Koreshkov and he clinches up behind it. Koreshkov gets the Thai plum and Krantz drops to his knees to avoid any taking knee strikes to the head. Koreshkov throws one to the body and then presses Krantz into the cage again when he stands back up.

Koreshkov lands a short elbow inside, has a knee to the body go off Krantz’s forearm. Forty seconds left and Krantz turns the situation. He manages a couple knees before Koreshkov trips him to the ground. Koreshkov gets to side control and starts dropping punches just before the bell.

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Koreshkov
Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Koreshkov
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Koreshkov

Round 3
Koreshkov is stringing together combos and kicks nicely as the final frame begins. They don’t appear to be troubling Krantz at first, but after a five- or six-punch combo of straights and hooks, the American is on the run. Koreshkov gives chase, wailing away with punches as Krantz struggles to stay on his feet. Finally, Koreshkov corners Krantz against the fence. Krantz leans forward after a two-piece combo connects and Koreshkov blasts his low-hanging head with a big knee. That’s the final straw and Krantz goes down in a heap. Referee Gaudet waves it off after 51 seconds of round three and Andrey Koreshkov keeps his perfect record intact.

Booker Arthur vs. Shanon Slack

Round 1
The featherweights feel one another out with body punches and kicks. After a minute, Slack shoots a single-leg and gets cracked with a knee as he lunges in. Slack gets the takedown after some struggling and scoots Arthur along the canvas, eventually putting his head at the base of the fence. Arthur actively works to maintain his guard while Slack just maintains top control, throwing sporadic punches to the body. Arthur posts up and gets to his feet with 80 seconds left in the round. He throws some long left hands before falling to his rear on a failed jumping knee. Arthur ducks a winging left hook from Slack but slips and can’t capitalize. Slack lands one more takedown with a few seconds left and that’s where the round ends.

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Slack
Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Slack
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Slack

Round 2
K. Mills

Slack showed off a potent
wrestling game.
Arthur again rushes to meet Slack in the center of the cage, but again they go into a feeling-out process. After 30 seconds, Arthur puts together some snappy leg kicks and Slack decides it’s time for another takedown. He gets it easily, but again Arthur is able to hold the wrestler off with his guard, despite Slack lifting him up and dropping him. Slack finally passes by standing, backing up and charging forward to dive into side control. Arthur quickly regains guard and Slack begins dropping more punches and elbows, though nothing severe. Arthur throws some middling shots off his back and nearly sweeps to top position, but Slack stays heavy and then goes to take Arthur’s back when Arthur tries to stand. Slack catches Arthur coming in and lifts him into the air, walking a few feet across the cage and looking for a hard slam. Instead, Arthur keeps his legs extended and they land awkwardly, and Arthur avoids any real damage. He does wind up underneath Slack once more, however, and Slack rides out the last minute on top position without much offense of note.

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Slack
Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Slack
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Slack

Round 3
Arthur slips after the featherweights exchange punches in the pocket and then tries a triangle when Slack comes rushing in to capitalize. It doesn’t hold and Slack winds up on top again, standing over Arthur and dropping punches before diving into half-guard on Arthur’s right side. Slack gets stuffed back to Arthur’s closed guard and starts throwing his hardest ground-and-pound of the fight with elbows and punches. Ninety seconds left in the bout now and Arthur still can’t get out from beneath slack. He tries pushing off the cage with his feet, but Slack stays heavy and keeps grinding with right hands and elbows. Arthur lands a few elbows off his back but there isn’t much behind them, and Slack finishes the fight on top.

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Slack (30-27 Slack)
Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Slack (30-27 Slack)
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Slack (30-27 Slack)

Official result: All three judges -- Myron Gaudet, Corey Manuel and Todd Singletary -- score the bout 30-27 for the winner by unanimous decision, Shanon Slack.

Mark Holata vs. Abe Wagner

Round 1
K. Mills

Holata prevailed in a game
of heavyweight footsies.
Holata clips Wagner with a left hand and Wagner circles out. They engage again and Holata sucks Wagner down to the canvas with an easy single-leg. Wagner creeps his guard up, thinking armbar or triangle, but Holata stacks up and drops a hammerfist. Wagner still has hold of Holata’s left wrist, but soon lets go and opens up his guard. Wagner closes his guard again up high and wraps up Holata again. Holata stands and drops back for a heel hook on Wagner’s right leg. Wagner counters with an inside heel hook of his own but it doesn’t look deep. Holata lets go all of a sudden and it’s a few seconds before the fighters, the ref and the crowd are on the same page: Wagner verbally submitted to the heel hook with a single word, “Tap.” Mark Holata gets the submission at 2:24 of round one and wins his way into Bellator’s Season 7 heavyweight tournament.

Jessica Aguilar vs. Megumi Fujii

Round 1
Fujii lands first with a grazing left straight and Aguilar comes back with a right, but the two women are still testing the range after a minute. Fujii shoots a double-leg and puts Aguilar on her posterior at the base of the fence, but “JAG” is quickly posting and then up to one knee. Aguilar socks Fujii in the face a couple times as she works back to her feet. Fujii drives a knee up the middle and Aguilar turns the position around with her forearm across Fujii’s throat. Fujii reverses again and they break off, resetting with half the round expired. Fujii walks into a left hand from Aguilar to push-kick her in the stomach. Aguilar catches the next kick, but it’s Fujii who topples Aguilar with a left hand, though it looked like a partial slip. Fujii walks into a big right hand now while attempting the same push kick. Fujii tries to pull guard, gets stuffed and dives on a single-leg. Aguilar sprawls on it and grabs a headlock, and Fujii goes to her back with upkicks. Aguilar leaves her arm in Fujii’s guard and “Mega Megu” goes for the armbar. It looks bad for Aguilar as Fujii rolls and adjusts the hold from armbar to omoplata, but the American sticks it out for the final 20 seconds and survives to see the next round.

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Fujii
Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Fujii
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Fujii

Round 2
K. Mills

Aguilar staked her claim as
MMA's top 115-pound woman.
Aguilar is working her counters early in the second round, catching Fujii on her way in with a number of stiff right hands. Fujii’s face is bearing damage from the first round -- a long cut under her eye and on her nose -- as she moves forward, trying to get inside and perhaps initiate the clinch. Fujii lands a hard left but takes four or five jabs in the face from Aguilar in return. Aguilar is still moving backward, keeping Fujii on the end of her jab and zapping the Japanese star vet with crisp counters. A left hook on the end of an Aguilar one-two lands hard; Fujii charges forward but can’t score with anything major in the last 30 seconds as Aguilar sticks and moves.

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Aguilar
Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Aguilar
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Aguilar

Round 3
Fujii is still moving forward at the start of the third, mixing in some more front kicks and finding a home for her left hand. A series of solid body kicks land for Fujii and shortly afterward she dives on a single-leg. Fujii gets Aguilar to the mat with three minutes left in the bout and works to extract her left leg and pass to side control on Aguilar’s left. Aguilar throws wild fists from her back; Fujii postures up and drops a couple hard rights before stacking all the way up. Aguilar closes up guard and Fujii kneels again, throwing punches to the body, knees to the rear and thighs. Aguilar tries to go belly-down with an armbar but Fujii slips out and gets back into Aguilar’s closed guard with 80 seconds left. Aguilar throws up the armbar again and Fujii stands, diving back in with big punches. Fujii stands again, throws punches to the body now, crashes back to the ground and tries to pass on the left. Aguilar wraps up the stacking Fujii’s head and Fujii throws blind left hands to the bell.

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Fujii (29-28 Fujii)
Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Fujii (29-28 Fujii)
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Fujii (29-28 Fujii)

Official result: All three judges -- Jordan Bass, Myron Gaudet and Todd Singletary -- score the bout 29-28 for the winner by unanimous decision, Jessica Aguilar.

Bellator Season 6 Welterweight Tournament Semifinal
Karl Amoussou vs. David Rickels

Round 1
The welterweights decline to touch gloves at final instructions and Amoussou comes out swinging, first with a hard kick to the body and then hooks up top. Seconds later, Rickels push-kicks Amoussou in the groin and Amoussou’s cup breaks. Ref Jason Herzog calls timeout while officials seek a replacement jock strap for the French fighter. Cutman Dean Lassiter rigs up an improvised strap for Amoussou and they’re ready to resume. Amoussou blitzes as soon as the fight resumes and attacks “The Caveman” with brutish knees and punches before shoving him to the ground. Amoussou twice tries a can opener neck crank before being shoved off by Rickels. They scramble and Amoussou stays on top in Rickels’ guard, though Rickels is doing well to control his opponent’s head and arms. Referee Herzog wants them backon their feet with 3:30 remaining and Rickels rushes forward with a leaping knee. He falls but Amoussou lets him back up after a few shots. Amoussou clinches up and tosses Rickels head over heels onto the canvas. Amoussou is in side control on Rickels’ right side now, his left arm looped behind Rickels’ head while his right socks the American in the face. Amoussou stands and Rickels swings his hips to regain full guard. Amoussou sits up blinking, indicating to the ref that he was poked in the eye, but Herzog didn’t see it so the fight goes on. Rickels briefly pulls rubber guard, gives it up and takes a forearm to the face. Amoussou keeps the ground-and-pound coming as Rickels pulls for rubber guard again. Amoussou sits up and unloads with hard punches, lefts and rights, then drops back for a heel hook. Rickels stays calm and waits out the last few seconds of the round.

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Amoussou
Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Amoussou
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Amoussou

Round 2
K. Mills

Amoussou eked it out against Rickels.
Amoussou catches a kick but can’t hold onto Rickels to capitalize. The Frenchman comes forward with a combination, then ties up and tosses Rickels to the ground again. Amoussou gets back to work from Rickels’ open guard as they scoot along the ground. Rickels threatens with an omoplata but they stall out and ref Herzog wants them up with three minutes to go. Amoussou misses a jump knee, blocks a head kick and snaps back Rickels’ head with a left straight. A one-two from Amoussou is followed closely by a leaping knee, and he pushes Rickels into the cage. Rickels replies with knees up the middle; Amoussou backs away. Nice uppercut lands for Amoussou in the middle of the cage and the welterweights clash kicks. Rickels strings together a combo, steps in and drives a knee up the middle.

Amoussou looks to be in a bit of trouble as he staggers backward, then lunges forward to put Rickels down with a double-leg. Rickels throws up his legs with 50 seconds on the clock but can’t get an angle for the armbar. With 25 seconds to go, Rickels gets the armbar and Amoussou twice slams him on his head. Rickels lets the limb go and Amoussou finishes the round with a few shorts hammerfists from guard.

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Amoussou
Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Amoussou
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Amoussou

Round 3
Twenty seconds into the third round, Rickels catches Amoussou in the cup again with a push kick. This one seems to have hurt Amoussou more than the first, and he takes a few minutes to recover. Amoussou slips on a kick and grabs at the ankle of Rickels, who goes down to the Frenchman’s closed guard. Amoussou throws a short left hand and Rickels answers with a hard right. More right hands to the body from Rickels now, and he goes up top to the head. Amoussou has hold of Rickels’ left wrists, perhaps limiting some damage, but Rickels is still controlling the round midway through and Amoussou’s got a huge mouse beneath his left eye, almost swollen shut. Rickels drops some solid lefts from the top, then begins punishing the body when he frees both hands. The Caveman stands and goes back down, and Amoussou rolls for a leglock. Rickels backs away, holds onto the feet and goes back to Amoussou’s guard with a minute to go. Rickels lays it all out in the closing seconds with double-handed chops and then helps Amoussou to his feet after the bell.

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Rickels (Amoussou 29-28)
Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Rickels (Amoussou 29-28)
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Rickels (Amoussou 29-28)

Official result: Judge Todd Singletary scores the bout 29-28 for Rickels, while Myron Gaudet sees it 29-28 for Amoussou. The final judge, Jordan Bass, scores the contest 29-28 for the winner by split decision, Karl Amoussou.

Bellator Season 6 Middleweight Tournament Final
Andreas Spang vs. Maiquel Jose Falcao Goncalves

Round 1
Spang snipes through Falcao’s high guard with a left straight and the Brazilian throws a heavy left in return. Falcao walks Spang into the fence and attacks with a one-two and a knee. Spang turns the position around and catches Falcao with big combos against the fence. Falcao stays up but he’s clearly in trouble, a dazed look in his eye as he suffers another combo and clinches up. Falcao turns Spang into the fence now and drives a few knees up the middle. Spang fishes for an outside trip and gives up his back standing, putting his hand on the ground to avoid knees. Falcao lifts Spang into the air and ragdolls him down holding onto back position with a waistlock. Spang throws elbows behind him as he covers up and crawls toward the cage. Spang goes to stand and takes a knee in the ribs, gets to his feet and is slammed down again. Falcao is dogged, just clamped onto Spang’s waist, not letting the Swede out of his grasps. Spang gets back up and appears to complain of an illegal strike. Ref Jason Herzog takes no action, but the next time Spang goes to a three-point stance, Falcao clearly throws an illegal knee to Spang’s head. Herzog breaks them up and Spang takes a couple minutes to recover. Herzog takes away one point from Falcao for the infraction and the middleweights resume on the feet. Spang lands a hard outside thigh kick, misses with a high round kick. Falcao rushes in to clinch and Spang frames up a guillotine with his left arm. Falcao changes levels and sends Spang tumbling over the top, then ties up again. Spang grazes with as spinning backfist and finishes the round throwing wild punches.

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-8 Spang
Tristen Critchfield scores the round 9-9
Chris Nelson scores the round 9-9

Round 2
K. Mills

Falcao came out on top in
the middleweight final.
Falcao comes over the top with a right hand, then ducks a punch and clinches. He trips Spang to the ground and lands in half-guard on Spang’s right side in the middle of the cage. Falcao looks for the crucifix, but he’s still in half-guard with Spang’s arm trapped. Spang rolls through and gets to his knees, and Falcao throws hard punches to the head and body, some of which Spang seems to feel strayed to the back of his head. The fight continues and Falcao goes for back mount while Spang urges ref Herzog to do something. Spang tries to stand, only to be shoved back down and bullied with more punches from behind. Falcao doesn’t have hooks in, just a waistlock, allowing him to follow Spang around the cage and keep the punishment coming. Spang stands for a split-second and gets hurled down again. Falcao lets go of the waistlock with 30 seconds to go and throws a knee to the body. Spang gets to his feet, goes for another ride and finishes the round kneeling against the cage.

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Falcao
Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Falcao
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Falcao

Round 3
Falcao comes in behind a right hand and rushes Spang to the ground, where a scramble ensues. Falcao ends up in the same position as last round, throwing punches from behind Spang. Again, a punch strays to the back of the head, but the majority of Falcao’s shots are on target. He drills a knee into Spang’s rear and Spang crawls toward the cage. Spang inches up the cage, tries to hit the switch but can’t get it. Spang goes for the guillotine again, and again Falcao rolls over the top. The Brazilian stays on top and keeps the hits coming, kneeing Spang in the ribs and thighs as he kneels against the fence. Spang grabs the cage to try and prevent a takedown, gets brought down anyway and winds up turtling again. Less than two minutes remaining now and Spang doesn’t seem to have any solution for this position. Spang gets to his feet and is greeted by more knees and uppercuts. He drops for another guillotine but it’s not deep and Falcao flips over the top one more time. They’re back on the feet with 45 seconds to go and Spang lurches forward throwing bombs. Falcao catches a right kick to the body, trips Spang down and gets to full mount just before the final bell.

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Falcao (28-28 Draw)
Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Falcao (29-27 Falcao)
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Falcao (29-27 Falcao)

Official result: All three judges -- Jordan Bass, Myron Gaudet and Todd Singletary -- score the fight 29-27 for the winner by unanimous decision, Maiquel Falcao.

Josh Quayhagen vs. Cliff Wright

Round 1
Quayhagen sticks a jab while on his backfoot and nearly downs Wright by sweeping the leg. Wright flashes some high kicks, nothing connecting. Solid leg kick from Wright but both men still look hesitant to engage. Now Quayhagen comes over the top with a left hook and follows with an outside leg kick. Right high kick plunks Wright but doesn’t drop him. Quayhagen whips a couple leg kicks around the back of Wright’s left leg. Quayhagen drops Wright with a straight left but doesn’t pounce. When Wright gets back up, Quayhagen accidentally kicks him in the cup. Wright is quickly ready to resume and they’re back to it with 60 seconds to go. Quayhagen lands a leg kick, has a left high kick blocked. Wright catches a kick and shoves Quayhagen down, then gets on top in side control. Not a lot of time left for Wright as he steps into full mount with 10 seconds left and gets shook off. Quayhagen finishes the round standing, kicking at Wright’s legs.

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Quayhagen
Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Quayhagen
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Quayhagen

Round 2
Quayhagen gets busy with leg kicks inside and out, mixing in some hard hooks. An good-looking uppercut lands but doesn’t seem to faze Wright, who’s still light on his toes, looking to counter. Quayhagen isn’t giving him many chances though, standing out of range and then dipping in for quick strikes at tough angles. Quayhagen puts the pressure on with leg kicks, uppercuts. He ducks a slow high kick and ties up with Wright on the fence, but doesn’t hold him there long. Wright lands a good left hand counter but Quayhagen comes forward and slugs with one of his own, then grabs at a guillotine. Quayhagen’s back is to the fence as he looks to tighten the choke, but his right arm is already coming loose as Wright digs for a takedown. Wright dumps Quayhagen on his head with a minute left in the round, Wright’s own head still tied up underneath Quayhagen’s right arm. Wright leans left to right, trying pop free while Quayhagen knees him in the body from his back. Wright finally gets his head out at the bell.

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Quayhagen
Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Quayhagen
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Quayhagen

Round 3
K. Mills

Josh Quayhagen got his third win
inside the Bellator Cage.
Quayhagen attacks the legs with kicks before sprawling on a shot. The local favorite’s strikes have slowed noticeably, but he’s still getting the better of Wright with arm punches and outside leg kicks. Wright now looks the fresher fighter, but he’s not letting his strikes go the way Quayhagen has. A clubbing right hand puts Wright on wobbly legs but Quayhagen keeps calm and walks him down. Wright recovers and Quayhagen resumes the leg-kicking attack as the fight enters its final two minutes. Quayhagen snaps off a jab, a kick to the body, a hard right hook. Wright won’t stop coming forward and he gets decked by another right that sends him slipping to the canvas. Now it’s Wright who thumps Quayhagen with a hard right, but Quayhagen just comes forward again and ends the fight throwing.

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Quayhagen (30-27 Quayhagen)
Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Quayhagen (30-27 Quayhagen)
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Quayhagen (30-27 Quayhagen)
