Aung La N Sang Guillotines Mohamed Ali in One Championship ‘Union of Warriors’ Main Event

Aung La N Sang sent his countrymen home with smiles on their faces.

The Bellator MMA, Ring of Combat and Cage Fury Fighting Championships veteran submitted Mohamed Ali with a first-round guillotine choke in the One Championship 39 “Union of Warriors” headliner on Friday at Thuwunna Indoor Stadium in Yangon, Myanmar. Ali (10-8) bowed out 2:38 into round one.

Sang (7-9) withstood a furious uppercut-laden punching burst from the Egyptian Top Team rep and countered an ill-advised single-leg takedown with the guillotine. With no means of escape, Ali tapped to the Myanmar native’s choke, the raucous crowd roaring its approval.

The 30-year-old Sang has posted back-to-back wins, both of them first-round finishes.

In the co-main event, former One Championship flyweight titleholder Adriano Moraes tapped Eugene Toquero with a first-round brabo choke. Moraes (14-2) brought it to a close 4:53 into round one, as he rebounded from his split decision defeat to Kairat Akhmetov on Nov. 21 to win for the fifth time in six appearances.

Toquero (8-3) nearly sprang the upset. The Filipino standout had Moraes reeling with punches and a flying knee that resulted in severe damage to his right eye. The 26-year-old Brazilian persevered. Moraes secured a takedown, navigated the Toquero guard and softened him with knees, elbows and forearm strikes from the top before slipping the choke into place. On the verge of unconsciousness, Toquero surrendered.

Meanwhile, Evolve MMA’s Alex Silva submitted Robin Catalan with a first-round arm-triangle choke in their flyweight showcase. Catalan (5-2) conceded defeat 4:25 into round one.

Silva (4-1) had to earn it. Catalan cut him above the right eye, stung him with leg kicks and pieced together quick, accurate punching combinations. Silva responded with three takedowns and made certain the last of them did not go to waste. He settled in top position near the fence, cinched the arm-triangle choke, cleared Catalan’s legs and waited for the tapout.

The 33-year-old Silva now owns victories over three different Catalan brothers, having also submitted Ruel Catalan and Rene Catalan.

In other action, Tha Pyay Nyo (3-0) dispatched Kyal Sin Phyo (0-1) with a knee to the body 96 seconds into round three of their violent featherweight matchup; Christian Lee (3-0) took care of Anthony Engelen (4-2) with punches and elbows 4:14 into the first round of their 160-pound catchweight tilt; Kyal Linn Aung (1-0) captured a unanimous decision over Thway Thit Aung (2-1) in their three-round confrontation at 170 pounds; Phoe Thaw (2-0) disposed of Saw Llay (1-1) with mounted ground-and-pound 2:27 into round one of their lightweight affair; Edward Kelly (7-3) submitted Jordan Lucas (8-1) with a rear-naked choke 3:47 into the first round of their battle at 155 pounds; Thar A Thal Ta Pwint (1-0) put away Kyar Kyaw (0-1) with punches 2:58 into round one of their featherweight pairing; Ye Yint Aung (1-0) stopped Yan Naing Aung (0-1) with punches 3:50 into the first round of their encounter at 170 pounds.
