Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Fabricio Werdum Cleared for UFC on Fuel TV 10 Main Event

Fabricio Werdum has his sights on the heavyweight division’s Holy Grail, though he finds his path blocked by a familiar face.

Perhaps closing in on a title shot in his second stint with the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Werdum tipped the scales at 242 pounds for his rematch with Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (237) in the UFC on Fuel TV 10 main event this Saturday at the Paulo Sarasate Gymnasium in Fortaleza, Brazil. Light heavyweight co-headliners Thiago Silva (206) and Rafael Cavalcante (204) also met their contracted weight requirements without incident at Friday’s official weigh-in.

Nogueira won the first matchup between the two by unanimous decision in 2006. Now 37, the beloved Brazilian last fought at UFC 153 in October, when he submitted Dave Herman with a second-round armbar at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro. Widely regarded as one of the best heavyweights of all-time, Nogueira has compiled a 5-3 mark since entering the UFC six years ago. Wins over UFC hall of famer Randy Couture, former two-division Pride Fighting Championships titleholder Dan Henderson, 2006 Pride open weight grand prix winner Mirko Filipovic and onetime UFC heavyweight champion Josh Barnett anchor his resume. Amazingly, in 14 years as a professional mixed martial artist, Nogueira has never suffered consecutive defeats.

A two-time Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championships gold medalist, Werdum has won five of his last six fights. However, the 35-year-old Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt has not competed since he needed less than half a round to dispatch Mike Russow with punches at UFC 147 nearly a year ago. The 6-foot-4 Werdum put himself on the global MMA map in June 2010, when he became the first man in almost a decade to defeat the great Fedor Emelianenko.

UFC on Fuel TV 10 -- which airs live on Fuel TV at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT -- will also feature a middleweight scrap pairing Daniel Sarafian (186) with Eddie Mendez (184), a welterweight duel pitting Erick Silva (170) against Jason High (170), a featherweight tilt matching Rony Mariano Bezerra (146) with Mike Wilkinson (145) and the welterweight final of “The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil” Season 2, as Leonardo Santos (170) meets William Macario (170).

Three hours prior, the seven undercard bouts will stream to the UFC’s Facebook page: Raphael Assuncao (135) vs. Vaughan Lee (134), Godofredo Castro (146) vs. Felipe Arantes (146), Ildemar Alcantara (171) vs. Leandro Silva (169), Rodrigo Damm (146) vs. Mizuto Hirota (146), Caio Magalhaes (186) vs. Karlos Vemola (186) and Antonio Braga Neto (185) vs. Anthony Smith (184).
