Phil Davis, Vinny Magalhaes Getting Head Start on Trash Talk for UFC 159
By: Sherdog.com Staff
If the light heavyweight pairing of Phil Davis and Vinny Magalhaes recently announced for UFC 159 came as a surprise, it’s understandable. Magalhaes, who washed out of the UFC in 2009 and returned in September to submit Igor Pokrajac, seems a curious choice for Davis, who was viewed as a potential title contender just 12 months ago.
The matchup starts to make more sense when you see this tweet from Magalhaes, which came just after Davis’ win over Wagner Prado at UFC 153 in October:
I wish Joe Silva could send Phil Davis my way at some point. #UFC153 @ufc
— Vinny Magalhaes (@VinnyMMA) October 14, 2012
According to Davis, who appeared Monday on MMAFighting.com’s “The MMA Hour,” Magalhaes already had a chance to fight him when Davis’ UFC 155 opponent, Forrest Griffin, withdrew from the event. Read more -

Is the flyweight division a welcome addition to the UFC lineup? Tell us below. | Al Bello/Zuffa LLC/Getty Images
Fans greeted the first flyweight title fight in Ultimate Fighting Championship history with boos on Sept. 22 at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, as Demetrious Johnson defeated Joseph Benavidez for 125-pound gold in the UFC 152 co-main event. UFC President Dana White was not amused.
White let loose on the boo birds, urging them never to purchase another UFC pay-per-view. Strong words from a man who has become known for them, though it is hard to argue that flyweights put on some of the most entertaining fights in mixed martial arts.
Other points of intrigue on the Sherdog.net forums this week include “Big” John McCarthy and his place in the MMA officiating hierarchy, Vinny Magalhaes criticizing Vitor Belfort for not finishing Jon Jones, a discussion on making kicks to the knee illegal and disappointment in ticket sales Across the Pond.

Weekend Rundown: Riggs, Magalhaes, Curran Notch Wins
By: Brian Knapp
“The Ultimate Fighter” Season 8 light heavyweight finalist Vinny Magalhaes submitted Mike Nickels with an armbar in the featured bout at Ring of Fire 36 “Demolition” on Friday at the Magness Arena in Denver. Nickels waved the white flag 1:19 into round one.

Magalhaes set up the submission with a standing combination, followed by a takedown into side control. Soon after, he trapped Nickels’ arm and left “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 3 veteran no choice but to ask out of the fight. The 27-year-old Magalhaes evened his record with the victory, his second in a row since a decision loss to Eliot Marshall at UFC 97.
Other winners at Ring of Fire 36 included Duane Ludwig, who struck fellow UFC castaway Ryan Roberts into submission in 2:05, and Anthony Morrison, who forced Alvin Robinson to tapout to strikes 69 seconds into their match. In addition, “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 9 semi-finalist Cameron Dollar submitted Kit Cope with a first-round rear-naked choke. -
'Pezao' Goes Aerial on 'Pe de Pano' for Best Submission of Day One
By: Jordan Breen
His UFC tenure, and his MMA career for that matter, may not be anything to write home about. However, Vinny Magalhaes did come through with the most sensational and shocking moment of the first day on the mats in Barcelona.

The TUF 8 alum turned in a strong performance in his opening round bout, leglocking Rodrigo "Cavaca" Henriques. However, coming into his 99-kilogram quarter-final against Marcio "Pe De Pano" Cruz, he was a considerable underdog and it was unclear how exactly Magalhaes would go about exploiting the 2003 divisional champ.
