Popular welterweight puncher Phil Baroni (www.twitter.com/PhilBaroni) will blog his experiences leading up to his One FC fight with Yoshiyuki Yoshida for Sherdog.com readers. One FC “Champion vs. Champion” streams live on Sherdog.com on Sept. 3, live from Kallang, Singapore.

I'm sitting in my hotel room at the Holiday Inn on Orchard Road here in Singapore, the local entertainment capital. I was surprised to find out that the Holiday Inn here is a four-star hotel. My 10 cups of coffee at the bar prove it.

I cut 12 pounds this morning with the help of my teammate Josh Thomson and "Big" Grant Sandow. The cut was pretty easy, and I feel great. People always say this, but everything really is going as planned, and I feel like I'm ready to go.

Singapore really is a great place to be. I had a great host in Mei Ling who took care of me, as well as the Gracies and made sure we enjoyed the place. The city's great, and the weather is beautiful. It would be great to be able to visit here without having to cut weight and prepare to smash Yoshida.

It's harder for me to write these as we get closer to the fight. I don't really have much to say when it's clobbering time. I just keep thinking about how it's time to f--- this dude up in just over 24 hours. After that, I get to have a few cold beers with the fellas. I can't wait.

I get to Thailand and I’m tired; my sleep was way off. Plus, it’s hot and humid as hell in Phuket. It’s like 90 percent humidity every day, so, you want to talk about swamp ass?

Of course, it gets worse when I’m waiting to get my bags, and one is missing. F---. I can’t even get into it. I’m getting pissed just thinking about it now.

Anyway, Tiger Muay Thai had a taxi waiting for me -- nice, playa, nice. I get in and they take me right to Tiger. I told them I felt like s---, but that I really wanted to train. They tell me to do the fighters’ class after I check into my hotel. So, I walk across the street to some s--- called Benui, which is really just a bunch of bungalows. These are really nice bungalows, too: Two rooms and everything you need, not just an empty studio across the street.

And it’s across the street from Tiger Muay Thai, so I don't have to drive in monsoons on my little motorbike. Thanks to Ray Elbe for hooking me up.

Since I’m only going to be training at Tiger a few days, they want to film me. I actually think Ray just wants to get me on film because I look like s--- from the flight. You know, just to f--- with me. He really thinks it’s funny.

I take the fighters’ class, and I end up going with J.J. Ambrose, an up-and-coming young fighter that I’m friends with. He’s trained with us out at American Kickboxing Academy and at Antonio McKee’s Bodyshop back in California. He’s actually the wrestling coach at Tiger Muay Thai now.

I am so, so busy getting s--- done before I leave for Thailand, where I'll be training at Tiger Muay Thai before I head to Singapore. Back at AKA, I sparred real hard today, since it was my my last all out sparring session. I did pretty good, as I stopped two guys in three rounds of sparring.

Let me let you in on a little secret: I'm ready and Yoshida's in big f------ trouble.

I have never had to catch a flight to Las Vegas right after I finished sparring, though. What a pain in the ass. I usually stroll in to the gym fashionably late, take my time to get ready, take a s---, put my gear and go last in the cage sparring. Today, I had to go first and it was a pain in the ass.

I planned on getting up early and getting there first, but as usual, I was up late, so it sucked. I'm a busy man, with s--- to do. I don't watch TV, but I'm always up late on my computer, emailing and surfing. I didn't even have time for my coffee this morning. It's a bitch, but fortunately, it didn't matter, because I kicked ass today. I was on point and stopped guys in the cage, simple as that.

I was in such a rush after sparring, I ended up showering without soap. After I realized, I just went out to the sinks naked, and lathered up with the pink hand soap.

Phil Baroni is back in action and blogging for Sherdog.com. | Photo: Jim Page

Popular welterweight puncher Phil Baroni (www.twitter.com/PhilBaroni) will blog his experiences leading up to his One FC fight with Yoshiyuki Yoshida for Sherdog.com readers. One FC "Champion vs. Champion" streams live on Sherdog.com on Sept. 3, live from Kallang, Singapore.

It's July 25 and I just got myself a corner man to go with me to my One FC fight in Singapore. My friend and training partner Josh Thomson injured his foot and pulled out of his Strikeforce fight with Maximo Blanco. I feel really bad for my good friend. He has been training so hard for at least three months for this fight. But, when he went down, I asked him if he would corner me and he thankfully for me, he said yes.

So I have a cornerman, and a great cornerman at that. I'm in good condition; my weight is pretty good. I am 190 today, as my fight is at 175. I'm feeling strong, fit and well-prepared. I spent the last three months in camp back at AKA. I love getting to drive there every day, it's beautiful. I was back here at AKA doing some kind of training, preparing to fight, since mid-May, so this camp couldn't have been stronger.

I'm training hard, two-a-days, sparring hard three times a week, really putting the work in. I know I need this win badly right now, as far as my career goes. I really am doing what it takes to give myself the best possible chance to excel.

I have been staying in good shape with my eye on the prize for a long time. At least for me, I never went up to my usual 230- or 240- fat bastard form. I have kept my weight down and have stayed in the gym longer than I have in a long time when getting ready for a fight. Come to think about it, the only time I stayed in shape like this was when I was fighting every six weeks or so, back in Pride six years ago.

All told, I feel ready. I wonder if it has to do with spending more time this year in San Jose than I have in Vegas. Coffee shops are a lot healthier than slot bars. Beaches and quaint towns are better than discotheques and strip clubs. Think that could have something to do with it?

Sept. 3, I am beating this chump's ass. Make sure you catch it, streaming on Sherdog.

  • UFC 125 Postmortem: No Answers for Edgar By: Jake Rossen

    Frankie Edgar | Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com

Was it “Rocky V” where Sylvester Stallone numbly intoned that life isn’t about hitting, but about how hard you can get hit and keep getting up?

Maybe I’m thinking of “Cobra.” Or “F.I.S.T.” Honestly, when you’ve heard one speech from a guy who can only drink from one side of his mouth, you’ve heard them all. But that one rings true, and it could have easily described Saturday’s performance by Frankie Edgar, who survived one of the worst blitzes in UFC title fight history only to come back and put on a clear and focused performance for the next 20 minutes. It was like watching someone stumble away from a car wreck, take a minute break, and then finish the Sunday Times crossword puzzle.

Edgar should be happy about his comeback, but the announcement of a draw -- justified, in the opinion of many -- turned him sour. He shouldn’t be: his stock skyrocketed with the attrition and wrestling that had improved to the point he was able to take Gray Maynard down repeatedly and stuff incoming shots. (Not possible in their 2008 fight, which Maynard won.) Maynard is probably Edgar’s biggest headache at 155 pounds, and he was able to keep it competitive.

A rematch is inevitable. And while that first round will be remembered, it’ll do far less for Maynard’s confidence than it will for Edgar’s.
