  • Greg Jackson: Frank Shamrock Was Stirring It Up on ‘Fight Master’ By: Sherdog.com Staff

Greg Jackson, on “Beatdown,” discussing Frank Shamrock’s argument on “Fight Master” that he is a fighter who has won world titles and Jackson is not:

“People aren’t going to tune in to watch people be super nice to each other for an hour. I would like it if they did that, but you’re going to have to stir it up a little bit. You’re going to have to make it interesting. That’s what he’s doing. He’s a great guy. I love Frank to death. He’s awesome, but that’s what you have to do. You have to get in there and talk a little bit and at least be confident in yourself.”

  • Sherdog Remembers: The Shamrock Slam By: Brian Knapp

An overflow crowd showed up to the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner, La., on March 13, 1998 to see Frank Shamrock defend his Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight crown for the first time against Igor Zinoviev in the UFC 16 “Battle in the Bayou” main event. Shamrock was a 25-year-old budding superstar, Zinoviev an undefeated sambo master who had already beaten Mario Sperry and Enson Inoue.

Twenty-two seconds after their encounter began, Zinoviev lay unconscious, the victim of a brutal slam that has since become a staple of MMA highlight reels. Shamrock successfully defended his title three more times before leaving the promotion. Zinoviev left the cage on a stretcher, the slam resulting in a broken collarbone and a fracture to one of his C5 vertebrae. He never fought again.

It was the second of four straight first-round finishes for Shamrock, who had taken out 1992 Olympic gold medalist Kevin Jackson in just 14 ticks three months prior and then went on to dispatch Jeremy Horn and John Lober in subsequent title defenses. His tenure in the UFC ended following his dramatic fourth-round strike-induced submission against Tito Ortiz in September 1999, as he relinquished his championship and retired from the company.

UFC 16 -- which took place on this day 15 years ago -- was far from a one-man show, as it also marked the promotional debut of Pat Miletich. He won a four-man tournament in the newly formed 170-pound division, defeating Olympic silver medalist Townsend Saunders by split decision in the semifinals before submitting alternate Chris Brennan with a shoulder choke in the final. Seven months later, Miletich became the first 170-pound champion in UFC history when he bested Mikey Burnett by decision at UFC 17.5 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Miletich compiled a 29-7-2 mark as a professional mixed martial artist, but it was through his work as a trainer that he made his name. As founder of the Miletich Fighting Systems camp in Davenport, Iowa, he helped launch the careers of future UFC champions Matt Hughes, Tim Sylvia and Jens Pulver.

Beyond Miletich’s first Octagon appearance and Shamrock’s unforgettable finish, “Battle in the Bayou” proved noteworthy for other reasons, Jerry Bohlander’s controversial armbar submission on Jackson chief among them. Referee “Big” John McCarthy called a stop to their bout 10:23 into round one, even though Jackson had not tapped out. A four-time NCAA All-American and two-time world champion wrestler, an infuriated Jackson stormed out of the cage, never to compete under the UFC banner again. Today, he serves as the head wrestling coach at Iowa State University.

  • SRN Rewind Teaser: Frank Shamrock By: Jack Encarnacao

Frank Shamrock has stood at the intersection of many of mixed martial arts' most important developments. As a fighter, he was at the vanguard of cardiovascular and endurance training. As a self-promoter, he charted a course for how to draw a record attendance without a television platform. As a businessman, he was involved in ventures that made several things clear about the essence and financial realities of the sport.

Always an honest interview, Shamrock has sharpened his perspectives on the fighting life and business in retirement. In his new book "Uncaged," the man born Frank Juarez delves deep into childhood trauma, juvenile incarceration and fight politics.

In a special two-part "Sunday Sitdown" interview, Shamrock joined Sherdog Radio Network "Rewind" host Jack Encarnacao to delve deeper into the pivotal moments he was a part of in the development of MMA. From the Tito Ortiz fight, to the Lions Den, to selling out HP Pavilion, to retiring after falling to Nick Diaz, Shamrock brings an edgy, sharp insight in these two one-hour installments.

Part 1 premiered on last Sunday's Rewind, and can be downloaded here. In it, the 39-year-old Shamrock discusses his youth, his delinquency, training under Ken Shamrock, fighting while scared for his life in Pancrase, and the revelatory moments in the 1999 classic fight versus Ortiz.

Part 2 premieres on this Sunday's "Rewind," which begins at 9 p.m. ET. Shamrock talks about life at the peak of his ascension in the sport, his emotional attachment and contributions to Strikeforce, Dana White, and how so many things came undone.

Don't miss one of the most in-depth interviews ever conducted with Frank Shamrock, only on the SRN Rewind.

  • Shamrock Sees Bigger Role for Fertitta as UFC Grows By: Sherdog.com Staff

Frank Shamrock, on “The Savage Dog Show,” stating his belief that Lorenzo Fertitta (Pictured) will have a more significant role in handling big-money deals as the UFC continues to grow:

“Now that they’re this giant global brand in sports, I have a feeling Lorenzo will be sitting down with the suits in some of those meetings. I just think we’re at a new level. Dana’s still going to be Dana and be the character that he is, but we’re talking real big, big money now.”

  • Fights That Make Sense Dept: Shamrock/Miletich Simmering By: Jake Rossen

    D. Mandel/Sherdog.com

Combat sports have always had the sadistic business sense to feed graying talent to younger, faster, better stars -- a torch-passing where the losing party gets third-degree burns in the process. It’s cruel, ugly and it never makes anyone feel too good.

It’s therefore encouraging to hear that Strikeforce wants Pat Miletich slotted against a slightly gimpy Frank Shamrock. (This opposed to either guy against a 20-year-old who craps concrete.) Miletich told FiveOuncesofPain.com that he’s agreed to the fight, proposed to take place before summer, but that Shamrock is sitting on his hands.

“Frank Shamrock and I have verbally agreed to fight each other, but from what I understand he’s being difficult in the negotiations,” Miletich said.

Like Saturday’s Coleman/Couture headliner, which had roots in the late 1990s, Shamrock/Miletich was flirted with before Shamrock took to cleaning up dog deposits with SEG’s lowball offers. It’s a few years too late, as most of the good fights usually are, but so what? There are at least a dozen fights in this genre to be made that feature charismatic athletes who could talk enough of a good game to interest people despite their title irrelevance -- Don Frye/Ken Shamrock from 2002 being the model example. Shamrock is 37, Miletich is 41, and plenty of fans are old enough to care.
