This Month’s MMA Birthdays: Fedor Emelianenko Turns 38
By: Brian Knapp
Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko turns 38 on Sept. 28. | Photo: Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com
More than two years after his retirement, it seems a forgone conclusion that tales of Fedor Emelianenko’s mixed martial arts exploits will someday cross generational divides. “The Last Emperor” will celebrate his 38th birthday on Sept. 28.
Between April 6, 2001 and Nov. 7, 2009, Emelianenko went undefeated in 28 appearances, establishing himself as arguably the greatest mixed martial artist of all-time. Though his reign of dominance ended with consecutive defeats to Fabricio Werdum, Antonio Silva and Dan Henderson, the stoic Russian maintains a cult following to this day.
The incomparable Emelianenko retired with wins over 2006 Pride Fighting Championships open weight grand prix winner Mirko Filipovic, onetime Pride heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (twice), 2000 Olympic silver medalist Matt Lindland, 2001 K-1 World Grand Prix winner Mark Hunt and former Ultimate Fighting Championship titleholders Andrei Arlovski, Tim Sylvia, Mark Coleman (twice) and Kevin Randleman. He delivered 26 of his 34 career victories by knockout, technical knockout or submission -- a staggering 23 of them came inside one round -- and never lost a decision.
Emelianenko made his final appearance under the M-1 Global banner in June 2012, when he knocked out Pedro Rizzo in 84 seconds at the Ice Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia.
