Dong Hyun Kim has won four in a row. | Photo: Li Lee/Sherdog.com
The conservative Dong Hyun Kim the MMA world once knew seems to be long gone.
Kim knocked out John Hathaway with an exquisite spinning back elbow in the third round of their UFC Fight Night 37 main event on March 1 at the Cotai Arena in Macau, China. Hathaway met his end 62 seconds into round three, as he was finished for the first time as a professional.
The “Stun Gun” was the aggressor from the start. He wobbled Hathaway with a right hand inside the first 30 seconds and later floored him with a left before swarming with standing-to-ground punches. After controlling round two with a takedown and some ground-and-pound, Kim found the finish he was seeking. The 32-year-old South Korean judoka countered a standing elbow from Hathaway with a perfectly timed spinning attack that rendered the London Shootfighters export unconscious and brought the match to a decisive close.
Kim has rattled off four wins in a row, stopping his last two opponents in spectacular fashion.
“I cannot tell you how happy I am,” he said. “I think I draw from all the energy of the Korean and Asian fans. There is no stopping. I’m going to continue going forward. I don’t care who my next opponent will be. I want to get a shot at the title.”

This Week’s MMA Birthdays: Dong Hyun Kim Turns 32
By: Brian Knapp
Dong Hyun “Stun Gun” Kim turns 32 this week. | Photo: John Evans/Sherdog.com
The first Korean mixed martial artist ever to win a bout inside the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Dong Hyun Kim will celebrate his 32nd birthday on Nov. 17.
Kim has compiled a 9-2 mark since arriving in the UFC five years ago, emerging as one of the promotion’s premier welterweights. A fourth-degree black belt in judo, he last appeared at UFC Fight Night 29 in October, when he knocked out former Jungle Fight champion Erick Silva in the second round of their encounter at the Jose Correa Gymnasium in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The performance earned him a $50,000 bonus for “Knockout of the Night.”
The “Stun Gun” debuted in the Octagon at UFC 84 in May 2008, as he stopped Jason Tan on third-round elbows and forever stamped his name in the history books. He has since gone on to post victories over “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 5 winner Nate Diaz, “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 7 winner Amir Sadollah, Afghan knockout artist Siyar Bahadurzada and Matt Brown, the resurgent Ohioan who has climbed all the way to No. 10 in the current world rankings. Known for a rugged clinch and a suffocating top game, Kim owns a 10-0-1 record in fights that reach the judges.
