A new threat has emerged in the Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight division.
Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza threw his hat in the title contender ring in the UFC Fight Night 28 co-main event on Wednesday, as he stopped Yushin Okami with an overhand right and follow-up punches at Jornalista Felipe Drumond Stadium in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The 33-year-old Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt has finished his last five opponents, four of them in the first round, all while showcasing his rapidly improving standup.
Souza’s latest triumph likely puts him on a short list of potential suitors for the winner of the Dec. 28 rematch between middleweight champion Chris Weidman and former titleholder Anderson Silva. Weidman dethroned “The Spider” at UFC 162, ending his historic reign atop the 185-pound division.
