Georges St. Pierre retained his Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight crown under a cloud of controversy, as he eked out a split decision over Johny Hendricks in the UFC 167 main event on Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Afterward, St. Pierre announced a cryptic plan to “go away for a little bit” but stopped short of full-blown retirement. The 32-year-old Tristar Gym representative has won 12 consecutive fights, the last seven of them by decision. Though UFC President Dana White made clear his desire for an immediate rematch, the reality of it happening hinges on St. Pierre’s next move.
