Top 5 Stories of the Week

In a matter of months, Strikeforce will be a thing of the past.

On Jan. 12 in Oklahoma City, the company will hold its final event before merging with the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Long viewed as inevitable, the move will bring with it an infusion of new talent for the world’s most prominent mixed martial arts promotion. Top stars liked Gilbert Melendez, Luke Rockhold, Nate Marquardt, Daniel Cormier and others will soon call the Octagon home.

Most importantly, the decision will allow for the introduction of women’s MMA in the UFC. Women’s 135-pound champion Ronda Rousey will undoubtedly serve as the centerpiece. The undefeated judoka has finished her first six opponents as a professional, all of them via first-round armbar. In doing so, she has become one of the sport’s most intriguing figures.

Other stories of interest on Sherdog.com this week included the announced return of former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton Jackson, the stabbing of UFC veteran Drew McFedries, a business move by former WEC lightweight titleholder Anthony Pettis and the yearlong suspension of now-retired “Ultimate Fighter” alum Stephan Bonnar.
