Phil “Mr. Wonderful” Davis believes in his base skill. | Photo: Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com

Phil Davis was a four-time NCAA All-American and won a national championship for Penn State University in 2008, so it should come as little surprise that he would extol the virtues of wrestling in mixed martial arts.

Now one of the Ultimate Fighting Championship premier light heavyweights, Davis has used his position of influence to tout wrestling at the expense of Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

“In Brazilian jiu-jitsu, people have become so cocky that they think Brazilian jiu-jitsu is the end-all, be-all -- and it’s not,” Davis told MMAJunkie.com. “Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a fantastic art to learn, and it’s an amazing skill to add to your arsenal, but sometimes, when you become too good at one thing, you become arrogant and you don’t learn other things. Just to be 100 percent real about it, wrestling is a much stronger art form than Brazilian jiu-jitsu.”
