Showtime Boxing Weigh-in Results: Santa Cruz, Frampton Cleared for Super Fight

Showtime Championship Boxing will return to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Saturday with an explosive night of fistic fireworks. Headlining the marquee is the WBA featherweight world championship between Leo Santa Cruz and Carl Frampton, which could wind up being a candidate for fight of the year.

And thanks to both combatants, as well as the rest of the roster, making weight on Friday, the massive event has been given the greenlight and will proceed as scheduled.

Reigning champion Santa Cruz (32-0-1, 18 KOs) has become a favorite among fight fans for his relentless pressure and the incredibly high volume of punches he typically throws. The Mexican star has already captured world titles in three weight classes – he previously won the IBF bantamweight and WBC super bantam crowns - and is looking to tack on the first loss of his foe’s ledger.

Frampton (22-0, 14 KOs) has made waves at super bantamweight, where he captured both the IBF and WBA titles at the weight. The Irishman is coming off the biggest win of his career back in February where he edged continental rival Scott Quigg via split decision. With so many options floating around the featherweight division, a win over Santa Cruz would certainly put “The Jackal” in the driver’s seat.

At Friday’s weigh-ins, both unbeaten warriors looked nearly flawless. On the scales, both Frampton and Santa Cruz came in identically at 125.5 pounds, clearing the final hurdle before they finally lock horns.

The co-feature will see Mikey Garcia take on Elio Rojas while a special card that will be televised on Showtime Extreme will see former world champion Paulie Malignaggi in a welterweight showdown against Gabriel Bracero for the “Brooklyn championship.”

The main card will air live on Showtime beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT, which will be preceded by the special undercard on Showtime Extreme at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT.
