Ben Rothwell Got Real About Losses, Changed His Habits

Ben Rothwell, on “The Savage Dog Show,” discussing the dramatic changes he made before his knockout win over Brendan Schaub at UFC 145: “After a loss, you’re going to feel like, ‘What did I do wrong? I need to change things.’ Sometimes you’ll just kid yourself and be like, ‘Oh, I just got caught.’ That’s the worst thing you can do because there is no lucky punch. That guy was training harder than you, and he was a little more conditioned and he threw that punch that knocked you out. You need to accept that and take responsibility for it. Most of the time, it’s just a matter of you didn’t train hard enough. You didn’t train hard enough. Training isn’t just what you do one or two hours in the gym. It’s what were you eating? How were you sleeping? How many video games did you play? How much time were you wasting not training? “I always wasted lots of time. I love video games, love doing nonsense, playing recreational games, things that don’t apply to fighting. … Basically since I opened up my gym in October, I wear my life on my key chain. It’s got a [key] to my car, it’s got a [key] to my house, it’s got a [key] to my gym. That’s my life every day. … Just take a look at me in my past and take a look at me now. I obviously did something different. I’m out-training all of my opponents now, here and forever until I decide to be done with this sport.”
